British musician, songwriter, DJ and producer Mark Ronson is well known for his collaborative talents. Partnering with a diverse range of acts across genres throughout his career, he’s created some of contemporary pop’s most effortlessly natural and genuinely collective moments. November 29th marks the fifth anniversary of Nothing Breaks Like A Heart, Mark’s dramatic and bolstering pairing with Miley Cyrus, so to celebrate, we’re running down some of his finest collaborations!
Nothing Breaks Like A Heart (featuring Miley Cyrus)
A worldwide smash, this instant rush of country-fuelled, dynamic disco-pop charted all around the world and earnt Miley her first ever Brit Award nomination for Song of the Year. The lead single from Mark’s fifth album Late Night Feelings, it was released at the end of November 2018 and has since been certified platinum in the US and twice platinum in the UK! Miley caught Mark’s attention when she performed on SNL in 2017, then just over a year later the pair went full-circle, appearing on the show to perform Nothing Breaks Like A Heart live. Subtle, instant and addictive, it’s the perfect union.
Find U Again (featuring Camila Cabello)
Celebrating its fifth anniversary in May, Find U Again was the fourth single from Late Night Feelings, giving a brooding bass lilt to the album’s disco-inspired pop bops and emo bangers. Featuring US singer-songwriter Camila Cabello on vocals, Mark co-produced the track with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker after the pair had begun work on the melody while touring together. The music video, directed by Bradley & Pablo, is a kitsch take on the western and film noir genres, paying homage to the movie Kill Bill. In the clip, Mark plays a bounty hunter who falls for his prey, played by Camila. It’s a storyline that’s as dark, yearning and glamorous as the track’s own collusion.
Oh My God (featuring Lily Allen)
A cover of the indie anthem by Leeds group Kaiser Chiefs, this brass-driven, personality-rich take featuring Lily Allen is a distant leap from the original. Taken from Mark’s second record Version, released in 2007, it catapulted him to international acclaim and aligned him with some of music’s most inspiring and influential talents. Bringing the classic big band sound into contemporary radio pop, albeit with a West London via New York twist, tracks like this instant partnership with Lily brought an idiosyncratic identity and unforgettable flair to his creative collectivism.
Late Night Feelings (featuring Lykke Li)
The title track from Mark’s fifth album, which since its release has been certified gold in the UK, this pining cut of euphoric disco-ball pop celebrates its fifth anniversary in April. Collaborating with Swedish artist Lykke Li, she channels the intimate delivery which brought her widespread attention in the late ‘00s, propelled by Mark’s sparkling production. Speaking to Australian radio host Smallzy, Mark said, “It could be about anything that keeps you up at night, it could be lust, it could be love, heartbreak – in that last five minutes before you sleep your brain goes through this slightly funny feeling. I love the idea of calling the album Late Night Feelings – I thought it summed everything up.” The track is elegant, immediate and sophisticated in its simplicity; clear proof that teamwork makes the dream work.
Valerie (featuring Amy Winehouse)
Released in October 2007 as the third single from Mark’s Version album, this track has undoubtedly become bigger than its original, which was written and performed by Liverpudlian group The Zutons. Mark’s take on their strident indie adds soul and flair, while Amy Winehouse’s inimitable vocals propell the song to stratospheric heights. Over the years it has become a beloved classic, as ubiquitous as the emotions it inspires. After recording a slowed down initial take, Mark continued to develop the track into the vivacious, upbeat dance floor catalyst we know and love. Certified three times platinum in the UK, this dynamic, heavy-weight of a union also confirmed Mark Ronson as the undisputed king of collabs!
