Legendary powerhouse Céline Dion is the best-selling Canadian recording artist of all time. With over two hundred and fifty million records sold, she’s won five Grammys, two Oscars, and has released a massive twenty-seven studio albums.
This week she shares her new documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, a feature-length film that she says serves as a love letter to her fans. It showcases the music that has inspired her life, while also telling the story of her struggles with a life-altering illness. In line with the film’s release, we shine our spotlight on some of Céline’s biggest songs and her most awe-inspiring performances.
My Heart Will Go On: at the 70th Academy Awards
It was the most watched Oscars in broadcast history. Titanic had captured the western world’s attention and imagination, winning a massive eleven awards on the night, including Best Original Song for My Heart Will Go On. Even by Céline Dion’s standards, it was a titanic hit. Performing at the ceremony in 1998, backed by an orchestra cloaked in white, she even wore a replica of the film’s notorious ‘Heart of the Ocean’ necklace. It’s since been recognised as one of the ceremony’s most iconic performances.
Because You Loved Me: These Are Special Times TV Special
Broadcast in late 1998 when Céline’s celebrity was insurmountable, this one-off TV special for the US network CBS drew a massive sixteen-million viewers and was nominated for two Emmys. Performing a mixture of holiday songs and her epic hits, she dueted with Andrea Bocelli and shared footage from her hometown of Charlegmagne, Quebec. Performing the Diane Warren-penned hit Because You Loved Me in the round, she masterfully plays to the crowd, camera, and alongside her band with accomplished style and elegance.
The Power Of Love: The Stade de France, Paris
In June 1999, Céline played two sold out shows at Paris’ Stade de France and became the first artist in history to perform for more than ninety-thousand fans a night. The concert was recorded and released as her fourth live album, Au cœur du stade (In the heart of the stadium). Playing The Power of Love, a cover of the ‘80s Jennifer Rush song, from her 1993 album The Colour Of My Love, Céline is captivating. As she personifies the drama and indulgence of the soaring power ballad, you can tell she has every heart in the stadium beating for her.
It’s All Coming Back to Me Now: The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas
Céline’s record-breaking Vegas residency A New Day… was conceived in support of her 2002 album A New Day Has Come. Premiering in March 2003, the show ran for five years drawing nearly three million people to over seven-hundred shows. It was the most successful residency of all time. Taken from her concert film Live in Las Vegas: A New Day…, released in 2007, this performance of It’s All Coming Back To Me Now shows the scale and grandeur of the series. Complete with full stage production, choreography and dramatic delivery from Céline, she aptly demonstrates just why she’s enraptured so many millions.
All By Myself: Hyde Park, London
It was one of the hottest tickets of the 2019 summer in London, as Céline took over the prestigious Hyde Park stage for a decadent and captivating night. Drawing a huge response from the lucky sixty-five-thousand fans inside the fences, this epic cover of the ‘70s Eric Carmen song All By Myself caught one of the biggest singalongs. Backed by a phenomenal band of musicians, she plays with the song, using the space to showcase her effortless and flawless vocals and keeps the crowd, phones in the air, holding on for more, before erupting into an explosive finale. Céline might be the queen of power ballads, but she’s the master of bringing them to life.
