Among Nina Simone’s many colossal talents – pianist, singer, songwriter – was her incredible ability to re-interpret the material of others and make it uniquely her own.
‘To Love Somebody’ was written by The Bee Gees’ Barry and Robin Gibb and Nina’s version, originally infused with an irresistible shot of funk and appearing on the album of the same name, gave Simone her second UK hit single.
Now check out this amazingly smouldering rendition that sees Simone steer the song into blues and gospel waters. Only she could do it like this and while seducing you with its charms, she leaves you scratching your head as you wonder which is the better version.
The real answer, of course, is that it doesn’t matter because you’re getting more bang for your buck. Which is as it should be.
