Still, for many, the definitive signature tune from the Manic Street Preachers early period.
Released on June 1, 1992, ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’ was the fifth single to be released from their debut ‘Generation Terrorists’ and reached number 17 on the UK singles chart.
The infectious, ‘Match-of-the-Day’ friendly hook demonstrated their platinum-selling potential but, as ever with the Manics, contradictions abound. Beneath the commercial gloss were furious, stream-of-consciousness lyrical barbs aimed at the heart of consumer culture.
The first hint that the Manics had the style, and the substance, to be more than mere stadium fillers.
