This October, we’re celebrating Black History Month and we have chosen the Fugees iconic album ‘The Score’ as our Album of the Month. Here are a few facts you might not know about the album…
– Released in 1996, the album included three singles “Killing Me Softly”, “Fu-Gee-La”, and “Ready or Not”.
– The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for ‘Album of the Year’, becoming the first nomination ever for a hip hop group. The album also won the Grammy Award for ‘Best Rap Album’ and ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal’ for “Killing Me Softly” at the 39th Grammy Awards.
– The album was the third best-selling of 1996 and became the longest running number one album for a hip hop group.
– ‘The Score’ marked a cultural moment for Haitian-Americans across the world, introducing their culture to the world and legitimised what they had to contribute as part of hip-hop and pop culture in America and beyond.
