Collecting all four historic Hendrix Band of Gypsies performances from the Fillmore East, including more than two dozen previously unreleased and/or remixed new tracks, we’re pleased to announce this intriguing 5CD box set, out now with vinyl to follow on December 13.
Emerging from the ashes of ’69 Woodstock line up, Hendrix Band of Gypsies saw the legendary guitarist reunite with bass player (and former 101st airborne brother in arms) Billy Cox, as well as Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles.
Their debut live performances were a series of four concerts at the Fillmore East in Manhattan – two on New Year’s Eve 1969 and two on New Year’s Day 1970, each of which were professionally recorded. Hendrix had sold out Madison Square Garden just nine months prior, but the Fillmore East was chosen as the setting for a live recording.
True to unpredictable form, Hendrix opened the four-show stint with a masterful, eleven song set featuring not a single commercially released track. Exciting new songs such as ‘Izabella’, ‘Ezy Ryder’ and ‘Burning Desire’ thrilled the sold-out house.
This lavish 5CD/8LP box set is completed by unseen photographs from talents like Filmore East house photographer Amalie Rothschild, new liner notes from the Billy Cox himself and every tune has been artfully mastered by Grammy award winning engineer Bernie Grundman.
