Original Soundtrackers – How Hall & Oates Conquered Hollywood

October 20, 2017

Sure, you’re a million selling pop artist, responsible for countless hits across decades and playing the biggest stages in the world.

But nothing proves how far your music has got under the skin of the culture like soundtracking a hit movie. Or a cult movie. Or ideally a few of both.

Hall & Oates – whose new greatest hits package ‘Timeless Classics’ is out now – have done exactly that.

Here’re just a few of their celluloid adventures.

1985 – Better Off Dead

A lovelorn John Cusack deals with his heartbreak the only way he knows how – by taking on his romantic rival in a hugely dangerous skiing competition. Look, it was the eighties okay?

1999 – Runaway Bride

Hall & Oates’ cautionary classic ‘Maneater’ soundtracked this tale of Julia Robert’s sprinting spouse. Perhaps slightly harshly…

2009 – ‘500 Days of Summer’

Perhaps the best use of the ever-popular classic in cinematic history (and its popped up in everything from ‘Stepbrothers’ to ‘The Wedding Singer’). Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s strut walk following his long awaited connection with Zooey Deschanel explodes into a street-level sing-and-dance-athon worthy of Ferris Bueller himself.

2015 – Aloha

Bill Murray’s curmudgeonly billionaire sheds his dancefloor inhibitions thanks to the charms of Emma Stone, and this guaranteed H&O floorfiller…

2009 – ‘The Office’/’Mrs Albert Hannaday’

Soundtracking actual movies is all very well, but if you’re truly a landmark on the movies’ musical map, you’ll have a song in a made up film, starring real superstars, featured in an episode of a critically acclaimed and internationally successful comedy series.

Thankfully, Hall & Oates have done that too:
