Released in October 1993, Everything Changes had a prophetic effect, transforming the lives and careers of Take That. The third best-selling album of the year, it stayed in the UK album chart for eighteen months and has since been certified four times platinum. It also holds the UK record for the most top 10 singles from one album and launched the band internationally.
This month, Take That are celebrating over thirty years of their breakthrough record with a special anniversary reissue, the first time the album has been available on vinyl since its original release. We’re joining the landmark celebrations by taking a look at five big moments from the album’s legacy.
You Are The One
Released in October 1993, Everything Changes was Take That’s second album, following the domestic success of their debut, Take That & Party. It was a global hit, reaching the top ten of album charts across Europe. In the lead up to the release the group went on a press trip to Japan for interviews and appearances, documented by British presenter Andi Peters for BBC TV show The O-Zone. The record sold three million copies worldwide and was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in the UK.
Pray
With its smooth 90s pop production and effortless harmonies, Pray was Take That’s first UK number one and started the group on a winning streak. They won an Ivor Novello award for Best Contemporary Song and Gary Barlow won Songwriter of the Year at that year’s esteemed awards. It also picked up British Single and Video of the Year at the Brits. The song’s accompanying clip was shot in Mexico and adopted a sultry, arthouse, black and white aesthetic. It also didn’t hurt that most of the band were half-naked.
Relight My Fire
The third single to be released from Everything Changes, Relight My Fire continued their run of number one singles in the UK. An unlikely but electric collaboration with Scottish singer and celebrity Lulu, it opened the door for more opportunities to platform their high energy dance routines and incendiary charisma. Performing on the BBC’s flagship music show Top of the Pops that year, it brought their fresh faces and bare biceps to a massive audience and only continued to fuel their ascent.
Everything Changes
The first UK number one with lead vocals from Robbie Williams, the title track of their album spent two weeks at the top of the charts while the accompanying music video picked up heavy rotation in Germany. In a light homage to Kylie Minogue’s clip for Give Me Just A Little More Time, it was shot in the same jazz cafe she used, also stylised in sepia and features the group dancing and partying with fellow punters. In 1994 Take That played Berlin’s Deutschlandhalle as part of the album’s extensive tour. Greeted by thousands of fervent fans, the show was filmed for their Live in Berlin concert video.
Babe
By 1995 Take That fever was at its peak. They released their third album Nobody Else, and it was announced shortly after that Robbie would leave the group. They headlined London’s Earls Court Arena to 20,000 fans, with songs from Everything Changes prompting a volcanic response from the crowd. Babe, the group’s third number one, featured Mark Owen on lead vocals and was the only track on the album to be certified platinum in the UK. Accompanied by strings, candlelight and renaissance decadence, this performance showcases the true adoration Everything Changes inspired thirty years ago, and still does today.
