Our Artists of the Month, ToTo, are perhaps best known for their tribute to the continent of Africa, the chiming classic of the same name.
And so in that spirit we’ve rounded up ten of our favourite geographically-themed tunes. Enjoy…
Toto – ‘Africa’
Our inspiration – how can you not love a soft rock classic that contains the tongue-twisting lyric, “As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti”?
David Bowie – ‘The Battle For Britain (The Letter)’
Taken from ‘Earthling’ – his first self-produced album since ‘Diamond Dogs’ – David Bowie’s fusing of industrial rock with drum’n’bass has weathered the years well.
Manic Street Preachers – ‘Australia’
The great down under is perhaps not technically the furthest point from the Manics hometown of Wales (that honour goes to New Zealand), but it’s still where Nicky Wire’s mind flew every time his thoughts turned to escape.
Bruce Springsteen – ‘Born In The USA’
Quite probably the most misunderstood song in The Boss’, or anyone else’s, back catalogue. There’s more compassion here than rage.
Bob Dylan – ‘Mozambique’
According to the Mighty Zimm, this is where the couples dance cheek to cheek. And he’s partial to a fortnight there, too.
Siouxsie And The Banshees – ‘Israel’
A gloriously atmospheric stand-alone single that marks the start of Siouxsie And The Banshees’ imperial phase.
Simon & Garfunkel – ‘America’
The harmonious duo search for a literal and metaphorical America – but do they find it?
Debbie Harry – ‘French Kissing In The USA’
Debbie Harry in primetime solo ’80s mode with a tribute to what George W. Bush would’ve doubtless re-named ‘Freedom Kissing…’
Jimmy Cliff – ‘Vietnam’
This 1969 gem has been hailed by Bob Dylan as “the greatest protest song ever written”, which is high praise indeed.
Mink De Ville – ‘Spanish Stroll’
Fuelled by the rhythm of the streets and an attitude to match, Mink DeVille’s 1977 debut struts like it owns the place.
’40 Trips Around The Sun’ – the new ToTo best of featuring three new tracks – is out now.
RECORD STORE DAY 2020
It’s that time of year again as we join the annual celebration of independent record stores up and down the country that is Record Store Day, with a whole host of releases exclusively available from your local music emporium on Saturday, June 20.
