This was Joan Jett’s second go at nailing this song, and it was this 1982 version with the Blackhearts that sent her hurtling up the UK single charts.
The first attempt was with former Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook in 1979, and the song was originally recorded and releaed by The Arrows in 1975. But it’s the Blackhearts’ take that’s passed into folklore.
The song was bolstered by this incendiary video, shot by Arnold Levine who also helmed promos for Meat Leaf’s ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ and Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Atlantic City’.
And yes, that really is Joan’s ‘Bad Reputation’ blasting out at the beginning – but that all changes when someone puts another dime in the jukebox, baby!
